Gifted and talented

Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following areas of ability at school - intellectual, creative, social and physical.

Our gifted and talented program provides these students with learning opportunities on top of the normal curriculum.

At Erskine Park High School, our gifted and talented program involves students being selected for inclusion in a targeted curriculum class group where our staff work closely and intensely with each of these students to extend, challenge and inspire them in their learning. Beginning students are invited to complete the higher ability selection test (HAST) to assist the school in making decisions around class formations. Equally, parents and carers have the opportunity to contribute to this decision making process by voluntarily offering their input to this process through a form included on the school website.

Students in our gifted and talented program targeted class complete a rich task where their creativity and insight allows them to produce dynamic group work to build, analyse, evaluate and then display and demonstrate their work product to their parents and carers.

In addition, a further eight to ten students from each Year group are invited to join our gifted and talented roll call/ pastoral care class each year. At present, students from each of Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 form this extension group which meets daily when the rest of the school meets simultaneously in roll call/ pastoral care. These students undertake a special interest 'discovery' project to demonstrate and share their interests, skills and abilities to the school community. These projects take different forms and focuses each year, stimulating innovation, enterprise and spirited creative work around problem solving, critical thinking and enquiry learning principles.

Students in our gifted and talented program are also provided with numerous opportunities to become part of our Tournament of Minds project group, participate in camps, attend research days, work closely with talented primary school students, complete quizzes and external tests as well as seizing every other opportunity available to all other students.

If a parent or carer wishes to complete the gifted and talented application form (PDF 193KB), it will provide additional information that can be considered in our gifted and talented program placement process. This is not mandatory. All of these forms are submitted to the Front Office.

Cost: $66 - To confirm your childs's position in this assessment appraisal, payment can only be made to the front office.

This will involve a parent payment to the Australian Council of Education Research (ACER) for this assessment and result package.
